Italy is the country that started it all — the Roman Empire, the Renaissance, modern pizza, espresso culture, and perhaps the world's greatest concentration of art and architecture per square mile. Walking Rome feels like moving through a living museum. Florence contains more masterpieces than you can see in a week. Venice is absurd and magical in equal measure. And then there's the food — Italy takes it seriously in a way nowhere else does, and the regional variation (Naples pizza, Bolognese ragù, Venetian cicchetti, Sicilian street food) means you could eat your way across the country and never repeat a meal. It's impossible not to love.
