Albania's coastline runs along two distinct seas: the Adriatic in the north (west-facing, sandier, calmer) and the Ionian in the south (cleaner, more dramatic, the turquoise water most people picture). The best beaches are overwhelmingly on the Ionian, along the Albanian Riviera between Vlorë and Saranda.
1. Ksamil — Best Overall
The standout beach destination in Albania. Three uninhabited islands sit just offshore from Ksamil village, creating a turquoise lagoon that looks digitally enhanced until you're swimming in it. The water is some of the clearest on the entire eastern Mediterranean coast.
Best for: Beach lovers, couples, groups, those who want the full Albanian Riviera experience Where: 15 km south of Saranda How to get there: Minibus or taxi from Saranda (20 minutes); some visitors hire a car from Saranda Note: Busy in July–August; arrive early for beach space. Sunbed hire available on the main beaches.
2. Dhermi — Best Scenery
A wide beach below a hillside village, with excellent water clarity and a dramatic mountain backdrop. Dhermi has a strong summer nightlife scene (popular with young Albanians) and a handful of good restaurants on the beach road.
Best for: Scenery, atmosphere, nightlife, younger travelers Where: Between Saranda and Vlorë on the SH8; approximately 50 km north of Saranda How to get there: Bus or car along the SH8 coastal road; approximately 1 hour from Saranda
3. Livadhi (near Himara) — Best Quiet Beach
A beautiful beach below the town of Himara, less known than Ksamil or Dhermi, with excellent water and a quieter atmosphere. The nearby Palasa beach (a few km north) is similarly beautiful and even less visited.
Best for: Those who want good water and beaches without the peak-season crowds Where: Near Himara, mid-riviera How to get there: Car or local transport from Himara
4. Palasa — Best Hidden Option
A remote-feeling beach north of Himara accessible by a steep road. Wide pebble shore, exceptional clarity, very limited facilities. One of the best beaches in Albania for those with a rental car and a willingness to seek it out.
Best for: Independent travelers, those with a car, those avoiding crowds Where: North of Himara on the SH8 How to get there: By car from Himara; the access road is steep
5. Borsh — Longest Beach
One of the longest beaches on the riviera — a straight strip of pebble-sand backed by olive groves and orange trees. Far less busy than Ksamil or Dhermi, with a village atmosphere.
Best for: Those who want space and a local feel over resort facilities Where: Between Saranda and Himara on the SH8 How to get there: Car or local bus along the coastal road
6. Shën Vasil — Best Near Saranda
A quieter cove about 10 km north of Saranda on the riviera road. Calmer and less crowded than Saranda's town beach, with better water quality.
Best for: A beach day from Saranda without going to Ksamil Where: North of Saranda on the coast road How to get there: Taxi from Saranda (15 minutes) or by car
7. Durrës Beach — Best Adriatic Option
The main Adriatic beach destination — a long stretch of sand along Albania's busiest resort city. Very different in character to the Ionian beaches: sandier, calmer, more developed, and much busier in season. Good for families due to shallower, calmer water.
Best for: Families, those near Tirana who want a quick beach fix Where: Durrës, 45 km west of Tirana Note: Water quality and beach cleanliness have improved significantly in recent years but may not match the Ionian south
When to Visit Albanian Beaches
- May–June: Warm days (20–26°C), water starting to warm up (18–22°C), almost no crowds, lower prices — the best months
- July–August: Peak season; water is warm (24–27°C), beaches fill with Albanian diaspora returning from Europe, prices rise, accommodation must be booked ahead
- September–October: Excellent — the sea is warm from summer, crowds drop sharply, prices fall
Practical Beach Tips
- Public vs private: All Albanian beaches have a public section (free) alongside private sunbed/umbrella areas. You are never obliged to pay.
- Water shoes: Useful for the pebbly sections at Ksamil and some other beaches
- Facilities: Ksamil, Dhermi, and Durrës have the best beach facilities. More remote beaches (Palasa, Borsh) have minimal services — bring food and water
- Driving: A rental car is the best way to explore the riviera; the SH8 coastal road connects all beaches
