Who This Itinerary Is For

This itinerary is designed for first-time visitors to Albania who want to cover the country's headline destinations without rushing. It works best for independent travelers comfortable navigating local buses or furgons, or travelers with a rental car for the southern section. It's not a backpacker sprint, and it's not a luxury tour — it's the right balance for someone who wants to understand Albania.

Best traveled: May–June or September–October (shoulder seasons, manageable weather, fewer crowds) Transport: A mix of buses/furgons for the main route, with a rental car optional for Day 4–6 to access the Blue Eye and riviera beaches with more flexibility

Route Overview

Tirana → Berat → Gjirokastër → Saranda → Shkodër → Tirana

The circuit is logical and manageable: south from Tirana to the UNESCO cities and coast, then north to Shkodër as an alpine gateway, then back to Tirana.

Day 1: Tirana — Arrival and First Impressions

Arrive at Tirana International Airport (TIA). Settle into your accommodation in the Blloku neighborhood or city center.

Afternoon: Walk to Skanderbeg Square. See the Et'hem Bey Mosque, the Clock Tower, and the National History Museum facade. Head into Blloku for an early evening coffee.

Evening: Dinner in Blloku — try qofte (grilled minced meat rolls) or a full Albanian spread at one of the neighborhood's traditional-style restaurants.

Where to stay: Tirana city center or Blloku neighborhood

Don't miss: Bunk'Art 2 (if you arrive early enough and it's still open — it's a 30-minute walk from most central hotels). If not, save Bunk'Art for tomorrow morning.

Day 2: Tirana → Berat

Morning: If you haven't visited Bunk'Art 2 yet, go first thing (it's one of the best museums in Albania — allow 90 minutes). Then take the late morning bus or furgon south to Berat.

Early afternoon: Arrive in Berat (journey 2–2.5 hours). Check into a guesthouse in the Mangalem quarter — staying inside the old town is the right choice.

Afternoon: Walk up through the Mangalem quarter's cobblestone lanes to the castle (Kala). Allow 2–3 hours for the castle grounds and Onufri Museum. The views over the city from the walls are exceptional.

Evening: Walk across the old stone bridge to Gorica and look back at the Mangalem hillside — this is the "thousand windows" view at its best. Dinner in Mangalem.

Where to stay: Guesthouse in Mangalem or near the castle

Day 3: Berat → Gjirokastër

Morning: Spend the morning in Berat — catch anything you missed yesterday, or simply sit in a Mangalem cafe before heading south.

Afternoon: Bus or furgon to Gjirokastër (approximately 2.5 hours from Berat, or via Fier). Check in to a guesthouse in the old town.

Late afternoon: Walk the old bazaar (Pazari i Vjetër) and explore the steep cobblestone lanes of the Ottoman quarter.

Evening: Dinner in the old town. Gjirokastër's guesthouses often serve excellent home-cooked Albanian meals — ask your accommodation for a recommendation.

Optional: If energy allows, walk up to the castle for a sunset view. The castle closes in the late afternoon/evening but the external view from the approach road is excellent.

Where to stay: Stone guesthouse in the Gjirokastër old town

Day 4: Gjirokastër — Full Day

Morning: Gjirokastër Castle. Allow 2–3 hours — the fortress is large, the military museum is interesting, and the views are extraordinary.

Afternoon: Visit the Skenduli House (traditional tower house interior) and the old bazaar. Spend time in the narrow lanes of the upper town.

Optional afternoon excursion: If you have a car or can arrange a taxi, the Blue Eye spring (Syri i Kaltër) is 45 minutes away — one of the most visually astonishing natural sights in Albania. Well worth the detour. Blue Eye guide →

Evening: Last dinner in Gjirokastër.

Day 5: Gjirokastër → Saranda → Butrint

Morning: Bus or taxi to Saranda (approximately 1.5–2 hours). Check in and drop bags.

Midday: Take a taxi or local bus to Butrint (20 km south). Give yourself 2.5–3 hours at the site — the ancient ruins, the baptistery mosaic, and the Venetian castle museum are all worth time. Butrint guide →

Late afternoon: On the way back from Butrint, stop at Ksamil (15 km from Saranda). The Ionian water here is extraordinary — perfect for a swim if the timing works. Best beaches →

Evening: Saranda waterfront promenade for the evening walk and dinner.

Where to stay: Saranda waterfront or guesthouse in town

Day 6: Saranda — Beaches and Riviera

This day is flexible. Options based on interest:

Option A — Beach day: Spend the day at Ksamil or another riviera beach. This is a guilt-free beach day.

Option B — More ruins + nature: Visit the Blue Eye in the morning (if you didn't go from Gjirokastër), then a beach afternoon.

Option C — Drive the Riviera: If you have a rental car, drive north along the SH8 coastal road through Himara and Dhermi to see the most beautiful sections of the Albanian Riviera. Allow a full day for this with multiple stops.

Option D — Day trip to Corfu: The ferry to Corfu takes 30–45 minutes. A practical option for those combining Albania with a Greek island visit.

Day 7: Saranda → Shkodër (or Tirana + Departure)

Option A — Return via Tirana (shorter trip): Morning bus from Saranda north to Tirana (4.5 hours). Rest or explore anything missed on Day 1. Depart from Tirana airport.

Option B — Add Shkodër (strongly recommended if time allows): Morning bus from Saranda to Tirana (4.5h), then connect north to Shkodër (2h). Arrive in Shkodër by late afternoon. Visit Rozafa Castle for the sunset view. If spending the night, explore the old bazaar area in the evening.

Day 8 (with Shkodër option): Morning in Shkodër — cycling the lakeside, the Mes Bridge, or organizing a trip towards Theth or the Komani Lake ferry. Return to Tirana for the flight.

Transport Notes

Buses and furgons handle the main route well. The Tirana–Berat, Berat–Gjirokastër, Gjirokastër–Saranda, and Saranda–Tirana legs all have regular services. Check current schedules locally on arrival — departure times and stops can change seasonally.

Rental car: Highly recommended for Day 4–6 (the Blue Eye and riviera) if you want flexibility. Rates in Albania are relatively low. The coastal road (SH8) requires confident driving on narrow sections.

Taxis: Very affordable in Albania. A good supplement to buses for shorter legs (Saranda–Butrint, Saranda–Blue Eye).

Optional Extensions

  • Add Komani Lake + Valbona + Theth for a 10-day trip covering the north
  • Add the Albanian Riviera road trip from Saranda to Vlorë for a 9-day version
  • Add a day in Durrës (Roman amphitheatre, Adriatic beach) between Berat and Tirana on the return

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 7 days enough for Albania? Yes — 7 days covers the essential highlights comfortably. You'll want more time if you plan to hike in Theth or fully explore the riviera, but 7 days gives you a strong picture of what Albania offers.

Do I need a car for this itinerary? Not essential, but highly recommended for Day 4–6 (the Blue Eye and riviera). The main city-to-city legs are well-served by public transport.

Is this itinerary suitable for solo travelers? Yes. All the destinations on this route are safe, well-connected by public transport, and have enough travelers going through them that logistics are straightforward.

What's the best time to follow this itinerary? May–June and September–October. July–August is fine but the south will be busy and prices on the coast rise.

Can I do this itinerary in reverse? Yes — starting in Shkodër (arrive Tirana, day trip or overnight north) and working south through the route is equally logical.

How much will this trip cost? Budget travelers: approximately $35–45/day. Mid-range: $60–80/day. The south (coast) tends to be slightly pricier than inland.
