Why Visit Saranda?
Saranda (*Sarandë* in Albanian) is the southernmost city on Albania's Ionian coast — a horseshoe-shaped bay backed by green hills where the water runs a shade of turquoise that still surprises visitors who arrive expecting something grey and post-communist. The city itself is a functional resort town rather than a scenic old-town destination, but its position makes it the best base on the Albanian coast.
From Saranda: Butrint is 20 minutes south. The Ksamil Islands are 15 minutes. The Blue Eye spring is 25 km into the mountains. Gjirokastër is 1.5 hours north. And Corfu — the Greek island — is a 30-minute ferry ride across the strait. Very few places in Europe offer this combination of ancient ruins, mountain scenery, beach access, and island-hopping from a single base.
In July and August, Saranda fills with the Albanian diaspora from Italy, Germany, and Switzerland coming home for summer — lively and festive, but also crowded and pricier.
Top Things to Do in Saranda
Butrint National Park
The non-negotiable day trip from Saranda. Butrint is a UNESCO World Heritage archaeological site 18 km south of Saranda — an ancient city with layers of Greek, Roman, Byzantine, and Venetian occupation visible in a remarkably compact site on a forested lake-island. Allow 3–4 hours. Entry fee applies; check current rates at the gate. Full Butrint guide →
Ksamil Islands
Three small uninhabited islands just off the coast near Ksamil village (15 km south of Saranda) in one of the most turquoise stretches of the Albanian coast. The beaches at Ksamil, both facing the islands and to the north and south of the village, are consistently rated among the best in Albania. In summer, boats run to the islands for a small fee. The village has restaurants and bars. Best beaches in Albania →
Lëkurësi Castle
A small Ottoman castle on the hilltop above Saranda with panoramic views over the bay and across to Corfu. Best at sunset. There's a restaurant within the walls. A short taxi ride from the center.
The Waterfront Promenade (Bulevardet)
Saranda's palm-lined promenade along the bay is the social heart of the city. In the evening it fills with families, couples, and groups — the Albanian ritual of the evening walk (*xhiro*). Good for people-watching, cheap ice cream, and cafe stops.
Ferry to Corfu
Finikas Lines and Ionian Seaways both operate seasonal ferry services between Saranda and Corfu (Kerkyra). The crossing takes 30–45 minutes and makes a straightforward day trip to Greece, or a logical transition point for a combined Albania-Greek Islands trip. Book in advance in summer.
Beaches Near Saranda
Saranda's town beach (on the bay) is functional but not exceptional. The best beaches nearby:
- Ksamil — 15 km south; the standout option
- Mirror Beach (Plazhi i Pasqyrave) — south of the city; a pebble beach with excellent clarity
- Shën Vasil — a quieter cove about 10 km north on the Riviera road
