Five days is enough for a memorable first trip to Albania, but not enough to cover the whole country without spending the holiday in transit. This route focuses on the capital, two historic towns, and the southern coast.
Route: Tirana -> Berat -> Gjirokaster -> Saranda -> Ksamil and Butrint
It works with a rental car or with buses, furgons, and a few planned taxis. If your flight arrives late or leaves early, treat the first and last nights as logistics rather than trying to add another destination.
Day 1: Tirana
Start in the center around Skanderbeg Square, then walk toward the Et'hem Bey Mosque, Clock Tower, New Bazaar, and Blloku. Choose one museum rather than trying to collect them all. Tirana rewards an unhurried evening of coffee and food.
If you arrive after dark, keep the day simple and use the next morning for the center. Do not make a long southbound transfer your first evening unless you have a strong reason.
Day 2: Tirana to Berat
Travel to Berat in the morning. After checking in, walk through Mangalem, cross toward Gorica, and climb to the castle if the heat and timing allow. Berat is worth an overnight stay because the old town is most enjoyable after the day-trip rhythm has slowed.
The UNESCO-listed historic centers of Berat and Gjirokaster are part of the route's cultural backbone, but the sites still need time rather than a rushed photo stop.
Read the Berat travel guide for the old town, castle, and nearby options.
Day 3: Berat to Gjirokaster
Move south after breakfast. The transfer may take more of the day than the map suggests, so plan one main experience after arrival: the old bazaar, a traditional house, or Gjirokaster Castle.
Stay near the old town if you can manage the slope and cobblestones. In the evening, eat locally and walk the upper streets while the light changes over the stone roofs.
Read the Gjirokaster travel guide.
Day 4: Gjirokaster to Saranda, with Butrint or Ksamil
Continue to Saranda, then choose between a beach-focused afternoon in Ksamil or a visit to Butrint. Trying to do both in a few hours can make the day feel like a queue of vehicles, so choose based on your priorities.
Butrint is the stronger choice for history; Ksamil is the stronger choice for a first swim. If you have an early start and current transport lines up, you can combine them, but keep your return plan clear.
Use Ksamil vs Saranda to decide where to sleep.
Day 5: Coast morning and departure
If your flight is late, have a relaxed Saranda morning or make one short beach stop. If you need to return to Tirana for a flight, leave a serious buffer. Traffic, waiting time, and the length of the route can turn a “comfortable” transfer into a stressful final day.
If you have a full fifth day and fly the next morning, use it for one of the southern coast choices in the best beaches guide instead of adding a distant northern destination.
The no-car version
This route is one of the easier Albania itineraries without a car because the main stops are established tourist bases. Use public transport between cities and a taxi or day tour for the final connection to an attraction when necessary. Read the detailed Albania without a car guide.
The car version
A car gives more flexibility between Berat, Gjirokaster, the Blue Eye, and the Riviera, but it also adds parking, navigation, and driving decisions. It is not automatically faster in the busiest coastal weeks. Book accommodation with clear parking information rather than assuming every old-town property has a nearby space.
What to skip in five days
Skip the northern mountains on this route. Theth, Valbona, and Komani Lake deserve their own time and can make a five-day south-focused trip feel fragmented. Add them when you have at least eight to ten days or build a separate northern itinerary.
Can you do Albania in five days?
Yes, if you accept that this is a highlights route. The trip works because each overnight has a different character: capital energy, Ottoman architecture, stone history, and the Ionian coast. If you want the beaches to be the main event, spend fewer nights moving and more nights in one southern base.
For a slower version with Shkoder and extra coast time, use the Albania 7-Day Itinerary.
