Who This Itinerary Is For

This itinerary is for first-time visitors to Hungary who want to see beyond Budapest — specifically, travelers who have at least one week and want to combine the capital with the wine country and lake that make Hungary's countryside worthwhile.

Route: Budapest (3 nights) → Eger (1–2 nights) → Tokaj (1 night) → Lake Balaton/Tihany (1–2 nights) → Budapest (departure)

Transport: Mainly by train; optional car rental for Lake Balaton gives more flexibility.

Best season: May–October. Wine harvest (September–October) adds a particular dimension to the Eger and Tokaj stops.

Days 1–3: Budapest

Spend your first three days in Budapest. The capital deserves at least this much time — ideally four or five days if you can manage it.

Highlights:

  • Buda Castle and Castle Hill (Day 1)
  • Hungarian Parliament and the Jewish Quarter / ruin bars (Day 2)
  • Széchenyi Thermal Bath and City Park (Day 3)

For a detailed day-by-day plan for Budapest, see the Budapest 3-day itinerary →.

Where to stay: District V (Inner Pest) or District VI (Andrássy Avenue) for central access to all sights.

Day 4: Budapest → Eger

Morning: Take the train from Budapest Keleti to Eger. Approximately 2 hours; multiple services daily.

Afternoon: Check into your guesthouse in the old town (staying in or walking distance from the center is essential). Explore the Baroque old town on foot — the main square (Dobó István tér), the Minorite Church, the Lyceum.

Late afternoon/evening: Walk to the Valley of the Beautiful Women (*Szépasszony-völgy*) — 15 minutes on foot from the center. Find a wine cellar you like and settle in. This is one of the most enjoyable evenings in Hungary — informal, local, genuinely fun. Order Egri Bikavér (the local red) and Egri Csillag (the local white), eat kolbász.

Where to stay: Eger old town — guesthouse or boutique hotel within walking distance of the main square.

Day 5: Eger

Morning: Eger Castle. Allow 2.5–3 hours for the castle grounds, underground casemates, and museum. The fortifications and the views from the walls are excellent. This is where the famous 1552 siege against the Ottomans took place.

Afternoon: Walk through the inner city at a slower pace — the Lyceum library hall (trompe l'oeil ceiling), the Minaret (northernmost Ottoman minaret in Hungary), and the thermal bath if you want a soak.

Optional day trip: If you have a car or can arrange a taxi, a late afternoon drive to the Bukk National Park (30 minutes north of Eger) gives access to limestone gorges and forest trails.

Evening: Dinner in the old town. The area around the main square has several good restaurants. Try the local version of hortobágyi húsos palacsinta (savory crepes filled with veal).

Day 6: Eger → Tokaj

Morning: Bus or car from Eger to Tokaj. By bus approximately 2–2.5 hours (via Miskolc); by car approximately 1.5 hours direct. Check current schedules.

Tokaj is a small town (under 5,000 people) in the UNESCO-listed Tokaj Wine Region — rolling vineyards, the confluence of the Tisza and Bodrog rivers, and wine cellars that have been producing Aszú since at least the 16th century.

Afternoon: Wine cellar visits. The town has multiple cellars offering tastings — from the famous Rákóczi Cellar (an enormous vaulted cellar system) to smaller family producers. An Aszú tasting (the golden dessert wine made from noble-rot grapes) is the essential experience. Dry Furmint and Hárslevelű are also excellent and increasingly available.

Walk through the vineyards on the hillside above the town — the UNESCO cultural landscape designation covers the complete mosaic of vineyards, cellars, and towns.

Evening: Dinner in Tokaj. The town has a small number of restaurants; restaurant attached to a winery is often the best option.

Where to stay: Tokaj town or a wine estate guesthouse in the surrounding hills.

Day 7: Tokaj → Lake Balaton → Departure

Option A — Day trip to Balaton + Departure: Morning train from Tokaj back towards Budapest. Stop at Lake Balaton on the way — take the train to Balatonfüred, bus to Tihany Peninsula, and spend 3–4 hours exploring the abbey and lavender slopes. Continue to Budapest for the evening or departure.

Option B — Add a night at Balaton (8-day version): From Tokaj, take the train back through Budapest to Balatonfüred (change at Budapest Déli; total approximately 4h). Stay overnight at Balatonfüred or Tihany. Full day at the lake on Day 8 — Tihany abbey, a swim, a Badacsony wine excursion — then return to Budapest for departure.

Transport Notes

Train: Hungary's MÁV rail network connects all the main stops on this itinerary. Budapest → Eger is a direct 2-hour train from Keleti. Tokaj is reached via Miskolc. Lake Balaton is served from Budapest Déli. Buy tickets at the station or online at jegy.mav.hu — Intercity (IC) trains require a supplement booking.

Bus: For Eger–Tokaj, a bus via Miskolc may be the most practical connection. Check Volánbusz for current routes and schedules.

Car: Renting a car from Eger (pick up after checking out) gives maximum flexibility for Tokaj and the Balaton northern shore. Return to Budapest airport if needed.

  • Extend Balaton to 3 nights for a full wine-and-beach circuit (Tihany, Balatonfüred, Badacsony, Keszthely)

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 7 days enough for Hungary? Yes — this itinerary gives you a solid and genuinely satisfying picture of Hungary beyond Budapest. You'll want more time to add Pécs, the Great Plain, or a longer Lake Balaton stay.

Can I do this itinerary without a car? Yes — all the main legs (Budapest→Eger, Eger→Tokaj/Miskolc, back to Balaton) are served by train or bus. A car adds flexibility at Balaton and makes Tokaj easier.

What is the best time of year for this route? September–October is exceptional — the wine harvest in Eger and Tokaj, warm enough for Balaton, and autumn color in the Bükk hills. May–June is also excellent.

How far in advance should I book accommodation? For Budapest and peak Lake Balaton season (July–August), book 2–4 weeks ahead minimum. Eger and Tokaj are less pressured but book ahead for weekends.

Can I add Pécs to this itinerary? Pécs is 3 hours south of Budapest and doesn't fit naturally on the Budapest–Eger–Tokaj–Balaton loop without significant backtracking. Better to add it as a 2-day extension from Budapest at the start or end of the trip.
